If you were a teenager of the 1980s, maybe you remember a rap festival tour that crossed the United States. It was called Fresh Fest. Fresh Fest was the first Hip Hop Tour that began in 1984. I remember paying maybe $12.50 for my ticket as I sat for hours in the Summer heat in a half filled stadium. We came to see the headliners likeĀ  Run DMC, Whodini and The Fat Boys.

At the early Fresh Fest Festivals, opening acts included a very skinny LL Cool J, UTFO, Newcleus and others. Groups who are now viewed as the pioneers of Hip Hop. I don’t think we really understood what we were witnessing.

Today, with that same lineup, that ticket could easily start at $300. Think of Fresh Fest as the first Coachella for Hip Hop. Do you remember?

Here’s some video footage of the documentary that I found on YouTube.

And check out this spotify playlist.
