Yikes! The Summer Clearance sales are in full swing. The commercials are under way. Crayons are on the front shelf. We know what’s up. Back to School preparation is in full effect. For our family, we are less than 3 weeks away from the first day of school. We also have a back to school milestone our family. Our oldest starts Middle School this year.

I recently downloaded the back to school list for our two school age boys. No surprises on the 4th graders list. But the 6th grader’s list was a shocker. I don’t recall my folks having to buy all of the things listed on the back to school supply list. One item included safety goggles. Safety goggles? Who knew. Why can’t the supply list have simple items like this?

Mind you, we’ve done our research on the Middle School. We know the classes our son will take. We’re excited of the opportunities he will have to meet new friends and learn new things. But, I have to admit, I have my reservations.

From reports of middle schoolers using social media, cyber bullying, this new Common Core curriculum, and other “stuff.” This new Middle School does not give me the warm fuzzy reminders of our days in Middle School. Just like The New Kindergarten was our First grade, looks like sixth grade is looking more and more like our seventh grade in many instances.

What do you think? Are you an experienced Middle school parent? What do we have to look forward to? Please leave a comment. Or better yet, join us on our Twitter chat tonight at 8PM CDT under the hashtag #olskoolchat.
