How I Learned The Love Language Of My Tween Son

My husband and I recently had a heart to heart concerning our three sons. We both agreed that we needed to take more time out with each of them individually to learn each of their love languages. I kind of knew my middle son’s love language. But when my friends at Ruby Tuesday treated me with a gift card,  I seized the opportunity to take him out on a date.

When I told him my plan, his initial response was “Ewwwww Mom. A Date?” I chuckled. When I mentioned  food was involved, his attitude surprisingly changed.

On our way to Ruby Tuesday, I was asking questions of him. You know, How’s school? Who are your new friends? Not really any response.  He even told me I was asking too many questions. That was my cue to be quiet and just enjoy our time in the car together and exploring.

Before we arrived, I mentioned that on a date, the guy should open the doors for the lady. When I stopped the car, he ran to the driver’s side to open my door. Then he ran in front of me to open the restaurant door.

We decided to sit in a booth. Ruby Tuesday has a great kid’s menu with meals starting at $3.99. And even though my 10 year old was old enough to eat off of the kid’s menu, I wanted him to feel extra special this evening.

He ordered a root beer while I had the raspberry lemonade. He ordered the Four Way Sampler with Southern style chicken tenders, fire wings, Thai spring rolls, and fried mozzarella while I ordered the Ruby’s Classic Burger with Fries.

Of course, he was trying to eat all of my fries as usual.

And while enjoying our alone time, I asked him what makes him feel loved by me. His answer blew me away. He mentioned the following things.

When I watch TV with him.
When I cook for him.
When I help him with his homework.
And when I take him places.

No mention of money. Or things. Just simply spending time with him.

I paused because I didn’t want our time to end. He talked about the Double Chocolate Cake all evening. I’ll admit, this cake is sinful. It is a chocolate cake with a molten heart of chocolate. It is served with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream accented with strawberry sauce. We shared it and indulged.

Our service was excellent, but more importantly, the time with my guy was fantastic too.

And thanks to Ruby Tuesday, I confirmed my son’s Love Language is Quality Time.

Now, I want you to have a special time at Ruby Tuesday. Here’s a chance for you to win a $25 gift card.

I love that your son appreciates the things you do for him and not what you give him... its great to hear that spending time with you is important ... when he's older I hope that stays the same.

When I try to make a date with my nieces or nephew its "let me check the calendar"

They grow up so fast so enjoy this time ... OK now I'm hungry and thinking about the molten chocolate in that cake :/

First of all, he looks so sweet opening the door for you! Secondly, I know that some folks disparage eating out, but it's nice to not have to worry about cooking and be able to spend some quality time! <3
