His name was Mike Brown. He just graduated from high school. A high school that’s had its own set of challenges the past few years. Today, he would have started technical college. I don’t know what he was going to study. Maybe HVAC or Computer Repair. Maybe welding or auto mechanic. The point was, he was at least trying to do SOMETHING. And now, from a bad decision on Saturday Mike Brown is dead. He was fatally shot by a police officer. A police officer that serves in a community that is socio economically oppressed. And while there are so many dynamics and we still don’t know the true story of what happened. We only know this. A mother now has to bury her son. And as mother, I just can’t deal with that at all.
I have no words. My heart goes out to Lesley McSpadden, Mike Brown’s mother. Lesley did the best she could to make sure that her son graduated from high school. And Lesley who does not want her son’s name remembered this way. As a mother, I can not even imagine what she is going through right now.
Then today, this picture came up on my time line.
It reminded me that as we gather our emotions and ask all of the questions, let’s do this. But don’t just pray for St. Louis. Pray for our nation. Pray for Lesley McSpadden. Pray for all of our sons out there who are misguided. Pray for our sons who are doing the right thing. Just pray.
And after you’ve prayed and God shows you what to do, act. Mentor. Employ. Teach. Discipline. Do something.
Let’s not have anymore Mike Browns. Enough is enough.
