Ok, this has a little sentiment to me. I actually saw the The Beastie Boys live in 1986 (Yes aging myself) when they were the opening act of Run DMC’s “Raising Hell” Tour. We had no idea who we were seeing because “Fight For Your Right To Party” off the album “License To Ill” had not been released yet. So when I saw the video for the toy company, GoldieBlox, using the song “Girls”, it put me in a good place while promoting a great cause.

I mean, who doesn’t want to see a video that empowers young girls to pursue toys that will make them think scientifically? And the video has gone viral with over eight million views.

So when GoldiBlox put in a lawsuit against The Beastie Boys claiming Fair Use, I was a little outdone. I mean “Girls” is iconic Beastie Boys. We all thought the song had been cleared for use, but apparently not.

According to Entertainment Weekly, The Beastie Boys wrote and open letter to GoldieBlox in light of their lawsuit. It’s an unfortunate turn of events for a message that has merit but will now end up in court.

Here’s the video in question and we’ll see how long it will be available.

Do you think the Fair Use Clause will hold up in court? Leave a comment.
