Friends, Living Single, 90s

I know Friends debuted 20 years ago this week (September 22, 1994). All of a sudden, it made great strides in depicting 20somethings of the 90s. It was, and still is an icon. And while everyone is talking about Friends, I just want to add this little tidbit to the mix.

Friends Cast

Friends has a big brother. A big brother that is one year older and has a beloved following to this day.

Meet Living Single which is 21 years old this year (August 29, 1993).

There are so many similarities between the two shows that is unreal.

Friends: Six Twenty Somethings living in New York (Manhattan)
Living Single: Six Twenty Somethings living in New York (Brooklyn)

Friends: Flighty Friend — Phoebe
Living Single: Flighty Friend — Sinclair

Friends: Ambitious and Mature Friend with insecurities — Kadijah
Living Single: Ambitious and Mature Friend with insecurities — Monica

Friends: Obnoxious Male Friend — Chandler
Living Single:Obnoxious Male Friend — Kyle

Friends:Flighty But Cute Male Friend –Joey
Living Single: Flighty But Cute Male Friend — Overton

Friends: Too Smart For Their Own Good Friend — Ross
Living Single: Too Smart For Their Own Good Friend — Maxine

And I could go on and on. If you go back and watch both of these shows, side by side, the same themes occur.

I love both shows and each cast represented my twenty something time of life in a fun and amazing way. We aspired to live single and have friends to boot. Happy Birthday to both of these fine shows.

I always thought that Friends was a rip-off of Living Single. They took the same concept and made it "more mainstream"... even though it was pretty much the same darn show.

I still watch Living Single in reruns daily. I haven't seen an episode of Friends in years. No interest. I have never seen a NYC that lacking in diversity.
