“Saturday Night Live” (SNL) is an Old School Television Institution. Since 1974, we’ve been privy to see some of the best in the comedic and music game to grace the stage. And even though we can rattle off a host of comedy superstars to graduate from SNL, this list of women is small and women of color even smaller.

If anyone got a chance to catch Kerry Washington on Saturday Night Live this weekend, she did an amazing job. She’s also in an elite group of African American Actresses. The image below tells the story.

Middle Row: Janet Jackson,Maya Rudolph and Gabourey Sidibe
Bottom Row: Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington and Queen Latifah

SNL is under the microscope this season for its new cast. And when I heard that only eight other African American females have hosted, I have to admit, it really never occurred to me that the number was so low. But I loved how the SNL cast made fun of itself through the cold opening.

While SNL made an effort to make fun of itself during this episode, the elephant is still in the room. Will it stop me from watching the show. No. But will it make me more aware, most definitely. I admit, I don’t watch SNL faithfully like I did when I was in my teens and early 20s. Now, if a guest host that I am interested in happens to appear, I’ll try to watch. I also try to watch if a spectacular political event occurred during the week to see what type of parody skits will happen.

But to say that only eight other African American females have appeared as guest host over thirty-nine years makes the elephant even more apparent.

I've never been a big fan of SNL and can't say that I watch the show, but I was equally shocked to find out the low number. Hopefully they will do better now that it's been brought to attention.

I've only watched SNL twice in my entire life; I'll catch certain skits on youtube if everyone is talking about it. I think the last one I watched though was when justin Timberlake did the skit of Single Ladies. :/ I would have thought there were more than just 8. That number is really low :/

I know. That is a very low number. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. She did great. The skits were very funny.

Oh wow! I didn't know it was only 8...I thought Kerry did an awesome job and I love her in Scandal

Looks like the conversation is underway to address it. If nothing else, SNL got huge ratings for this episode.

I am going to have to look that JT skit up on YouTube. I can admit that I don't watch SNL on a regular basis like I used to. And yes 8 is a very low number.
